July 17, 2023

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (ASO), a well-known regional orchestra based in Annapolis, Maryland, is actively seeking a new executive director on a national scale. This strategic decision aims to find a dynamic and community-focused leader who will work closely with Artistic Director and Conductor José-Luis Novo to shape the future development of the nonprofit organization.

In the role of chief operating officer of the ASO, the executive director will be responsible for overseeing all operational aspects, including human and financial resources, while implementing policies established by the Board of Trustees. This crucial position will play a significant role in managing and guiding the orchestra's growth, being directly accountable to the board chair.

Shelley Row, the chair of the Board of Trustees, expressed her excitement about selecting a new leader who will collaborate with the artistic director and board members to enhance the impact and relevance of the ASO both locally in the Annapolis region and beyond. Row stated, "The ASO eagerly awaits the arrival of a dynamic, community-oriented leader to join forces with the Artistic Director and Board of Trustees in expanding the influence and significance of the ASO throughout the Annapolis region and beyond."

To facilitate the search process, a 10-person search committee, including Row and Novo, has been formed. The committee will review applications submitted until August 11, with the possibility of extending the search period if necessary.

Novo, the artistic director and conductor, expressed optimism regarding the search process, stating, "The ASO has developed a carefully planned search process to find our next executive director. Our organization is well-positioned to attract the most talented professionals in the field, and I am highly hopeful that we will discover someone who will bring exceptional administrative skills and be a driving force in helping the Symphony and the Academy achieve the ambitious goals we have set for the coming years."

Prospective candidates must demonstrate a minimum of five years of senior management experience in nonprofit organizations, including a successful track record in designing and leading development strategies and fundraising initiatives. Proficiency in fiscal management, nonprofit budgeting, community networking, and fostering a collaborative and productive staff is also required. The minimum educational requirement for the position is a bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

Furthermore, the ASO is seeking candidates with a working knowledge of orchestral music, production, and operations. Experience in managing comprehensive, capital, or endowment campaigns, as well as negotiating and overseeing union contracts and requirements, are desired qualifications.

Individuals interested in the position are encouraged to visit the ASO's website for a comprehensive list of responsibilities, qualifications, and compensation details. Applications should be submitted via email to [email protected].

The ASO's nationwide search for a new executive director underscores its commitment to finding an innovative leader who will steer the organization towards continued growth and artistic excellence.
