May 10, 2024

The School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University is excited to announce the addition of David McCarroll, the concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO), to its esteemed faculty. Set to join as an Artist Lecturer in Violin starting Fall 2024, McCarroll brings with him a wealth of teaching experience.

Prior to his appointment at Carnegie Mellon, McCarroll has taught at renowned institutions such as the Mozarteum University Salzburg and conducted masterclasses at the San Francisco Conservatory, the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, and the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. His own education journey includes studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School, New England Conservatory of Music, and the Hanns Eisler Academy in Berlin.

Notably, McCarroll's accolades include winning the 2012 European Young Concert Artists Auditions and making his concerto debut with the London Mozart Players in 2002. His career has seen him perform as a soloist with prestigious orchestras such as the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich (under the baton of Simone Young in Grafenegg), Hong Kong Sinfonietta (conducted by Christoph Poppen), and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (led by Manfred Honeck), among others.

From 2015 to 2022, McCarroll served as the violinist of the esteemed Vienna Piano Trio, with whom he extensively toured and recorded. Their recording of the complete Brahms piano trios received the 2017 Echo Klassik prize, and their Beethoven recording won the Opus Klassik award in 2020.

McCarroll's instrument of choice is a 1761 violin crafted by A&J Gagliano.

Expressing his anticipation, McCarroll stated, "I am very much looking forward to working with a small class of violin students at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Music, guiding them through these formative years of study and providing them with the musical and technical tools necessary to broaden their expressive capabilities."
