Harmonizing Dreams: 30 Years of Empowering Black and Hispanic Musicians with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Talent Development Program
October 31, 2023

"Establishing opportunities for aspiring Black and Hispanic musicians to pursue a career in orchestral music, the program is soon opening its doors for new auditions.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Talent Development Program is commemorating its 30th anniversary in 2023.

This initiative, created by Azira Hill three decades ago, identifies and nurtures talented students in middle and high school. It was conceived when Hill recognized the underrepresentation of Black and Hispanic musicians, comprising less than 5% of the global orchestra workforce.

Reflecting on the program's journey since its inception, she expressed that its achievements are beyond words.

Participants benefit from weekly private lessons with a musician from the Atlanta Symphony, as well as opportunities for solo and chamber music performances, audition preparation, mentorship, and financial support for programs like summer camps.

Applications for auditions for the upcoming enrollment will be open from January 7 to March 7, 2024, and additional details can be found on their website.

Denielle Wilson, a current cellist in the Atlanta Symphony and a program alum, shared her experience: "I didn't have access to music lessons, and my father was keen on me continuing to play the cello, so the Talent Development Program was suggested. I decided to audition."

She further reflected on her career's progression: "It has taken me some time to fully grasp how my career has unfolded. If you had asked me maybe two years ago, I wouldn't have envisioned this happening. It's still surreal."

Founder Azira Hill, who is now 100 years old, expressed her sentiments: "I feel wonderful. It's beyond words. The joy and emotions you sometimes experience, finding yourself in tears, because we didn't expect this, especially when we were told it couldn't be done. But it happened."
