Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s art collection and personal items are being auctioned off near Washington this month with proceeds going to the Washington National Opera.

The late Supreme Court Judge was a lover of the arts and appeared at the Washington National Opera in “La Fille du Régiment.” Among her possessions are Picasso ceramics, old masterworks, and a famous fur coat. Other personal items that will be in the auction are several plaques and medals that she was awarded during her long career.

The sale, organized by an auction house in Alexandria, Virginia, will take place on April 27 and 28, and underscores the superstar status of the late judge who was popularly known as “RBG” when she died in September 2020 at the age of 87.

When Ginsburg died the Washington National Opera released a statement noting, “The Justice was a champion of the arts at large — but nothing came close to her passion for opera. She was a frequent attendee of Washington National Opera events.”

Francesco Micheli is set to make history by becoming the fourth Italian director to stage a new opera production in the 88-year-long history of the Glyndebourne Festival.

Micheli will make his debut at the 2022 edition of the Festival, staging Georg Friedrich Händel’s “Alcina.” He follows such Italian directors as Damiano Michieletto, Franco Enriquez, and Franco Zeffirelli in leading a production with the company.

In a statement, Micheli said, “Händel staged a world at its sunset, the enchanted and noble world of the Age of Chivalry of Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso. He did so through a magic-filled opera, full of special effects. This is why I imagined the show as a tribute to the most magical and nonetheless real thing I know: the theatre. The world of declining chivalry epics is reflected in the revue, a theatre expression that had its peak of popularity between the 1930s and 1950s, only to be overcome by modernity. Right now, while our continent is at risk of explosion – concludes Micheli – adopting as a Patron Saint a German composer who trained in Italy and who rose to success in England, is only a healthy process.”

“Alcina” is set to be conducted by Jonathan Cohen who is leading the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The opera will star Jane Archibald in the title role, Rowan Pierce playing Oberto, Samantha Hankey and Svetlina Stoyanova alternating in the role of Ruggiero, Beth Taylor as Bradamante, Stuart Jackson and Alastair Miles respectively as Oronte and Melisso.

“Alcina” will be performed from July 2 through August 24, 2022.

Bard SummerScape will open with the world premiere of Ashley Tata’s interpretation of Molière’s “Dom Juan.”

Tata along with an all-women production team birthed this production which combines the original 17th century France setting with the 1970s American cultural following Roe V. Wade.

Tata describes this work by saying, “Our production is an invitation to collectively imagine a world where the 17th century France of Louis XIV and Molière overlaps with society right after the passing of Roe V. Wade and at the beginning of a period that will give rise to what I’ve come to think of as The Trump Baroque. Our dynamic duo are two women who live in a patriarchal society where strides towards equality have been made and on paper a woman or non-binary person have the same rights and opportunities as a cis-man—but we have a long way to go, baby. Class is the determining factor of one’s opportunities.”

The program which will run from June 23 through July 17 will also include Strauss’ “Die Schweigsame Frau” as well as a dance performance featuring music by David Lang.
