Kirk Muspratt: Extending the Symphony's Harmony in Northwest Indiana
September 1, 2023

In the Northwest Indiana Times article from Sunday, dated August 27th, Joseph S. Pete reports that the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra has renewed the contract of their Music Director and Conductor, Kirk Muspratt, for an additional two years. Muspratt, who originally hails from Canada but became a U.S. citizen in 2010, expressed his gratitude for the community's support, having spent 22 seasons as an integral part of the artistic scene in Northwest Indiana. He remarked, "Northwest Indiana has been my artistic home for the past 22 seasons. Thank you for welcoming this Canadian musician into your lives. I hope I have contributed something of quality, beauty, and joy to yours."

Kirk Muspratt has an impressive musical background, having previously held positions as a resident conductor with the Pittsburgh Symphony, associate conductor with the Utah Symphony, and assistant conductor with the St. Louis Symphony. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Shore Shore Summer Music Festival, a beloved series of free outdoor concerts hosted at various locations in the Calumet Region, including Fox Pointe in Lansing, Indiana Dunes State Park in Porter, and the Pav at Wolf Lake in Hammond. Additionally, Muspratt has been instrumental in launching a solo competition for young musicians, giving them the opportunity to perform with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra.

One of Muspratt's core beliefs is that symphonic music should be accessible to everyone. To encourage audience engagement, he has distributed "Just Ask Kirk" cards, inviting attendees to ask questions about the performances. Notably, Muspratt also holds the position of director for the New Philharmonic in Illinois and the DuPage Opera Theater.
