DNO&B recently earned another feather in its sustainability cap by securing a fresh BREEAM-NL certificate for its Production Workshop. The theatre adopted the BREEAM-NL method back in 2019, making it a pioneer in the Netherlands' theatrical scene. BREEAM, a globally recognized method, evaluates and certifies the sustainability of buildings and their surrounding environments.

In 2019, DNO&B proudly clinched two BREEAM-NL certificates, both for the theatre building and the Production Workshop, both rated as 'Good.' Fast forward to 2023, and the Production Workshop not only maintained its high standards but achieved a 'Very Good' rating despite facing more stringent assessment criteria. This translates to a commendable 20% improvement in our overall BREEAM-NL rating from 2019 to 2023.

BREEAM-NL, with its focus on actual energy consumption, provides a clear picture of a building's environmental performance and its alignment with global climate goals. The enhanced rating is a testament to DNO&B's unwavering dedication to sustainable practices.

The BREEAM-NL system is overseen by the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC), a national organization committed to future-proofing the built environment in the Netherlands. Rudy van der Helm, DGBC's Development & Programme Manager, presented the new certificate to Stijn Schoonderwoerd, DNO&B's General Director. In accepting the honor, Schoonderwoerd emphasized the certificate's significance, highlighting the importance of a forward-thinking mindset and recognizing it as a tangible acknowledgment of their sustainability endeavors. DNO&B remains steadfast in its commitment to social responsibility, hoping to inspire fellow cultural institutions while aiming for a remarkable 55% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.
