The Brisbane Festival has already announced some exciting highlights ahead of its full program launch on July 5th. Among the much-anticipated productions are the world premiere seasons of two captivating shows: "Bananaland," a musical comedy created by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall, and a new work by Brisbane's own shake & stir theatre company called "Tae Tae in the Land of Yaaas!"
"Bananaland," set to play in QPAC's Playhouse from September 16th to October 1st, revolves around Ruby, the frontwoman of a protest band called Kitty Litter. In a twist of fate, the band finds themselves performing in front of a sold-out audience of small children. As one of their songs strikes a chord with the young listeners, Kitty Litter faces a crucial decision: should they maintain their anti-establishment stance or transform into a popular entertainment group for their adoring toddler fanbase? This production reunites Miller-Heidke, Nuttall, and director Simon Phillips, who previously worked together on the acclaimed musical adaptation of "Muriel's Wedding."
Simon Phillips expressed his excitement to collaborate with Miller-Heidke and Nuttall once again, praising their musical contributions to "Muriel's Wedding" and commending their original work as smart, unconventional, and hilarious. Miller-Heidke herself shared her enthusiasm for returning to QPAC after their successful production of "The Call" last year, stating that creating a brand-new Australian musical from scratch in their hometown of Brisbane has been an exhilarating experience.
Meanwhile, shake & stir will make their comeback to the Brisbane Festival with "Tae Tae in the Land of Yaaas!," co-presented by QPAC and the festival itself. Inspired by the true story of Estee Lee and written by her sister Nelle Lee, the show follows Tae on a journey from adversity and heartbreak to a life brimming with adventure, success, and love. Supported by her family, a caring community, and a Fairy Godmother played by Drag Queen Maxi Shield from "RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under," Tae discovers happiness in unexpected places.
Nelle Lee, the playwright, described the project as one of her most challenging endeavors due to its personal nature. She expressed her admiration for her sister's ability to find joy in unlikely circumstances and shared her excitement to share this honest and heartwarming story with the world. Lee emphasized that while the play may touch on poignant themes, it will also embrace camp, positivity, and uplifting moments.
