The Flight of the Hummingbird Soars Across Schools
April 2, 2024

Pacific Opera Victoria and Vancouver Opera In Schools are teaming up to present "The Flight of the Hummingbird," a captivating tale set to enchant students all across British Columbia this April.

Crafted as an environmental allegory on moral fortitude, the opera features a libretto and imaginative design by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas and the late Barry Gilson, complemented by the melodious compositions of Maxime Goulet. Lasting 45 minutes, the performance stars Olivia Kang as Dukdukdiya, Bruno Roy as the Owl, Marcel d'Entremont as the Bear, and Keely McPeek as the Rabbit, with musical accompaniment by Nathaniel Ben-Horin on piano and Matthew Udry on cello. Guiding the production is Glynis Leyshon, under the leadership of Perri Lo.

Expressing his appreciation, Vancouver Opera General Director Tom Wright remarked, “We are privileged to collaborate with Pacific Opera Victoria in introducing this remarkable and exquisite production to the young audiences of British Columbia next spring." Emphasizing the initiative's continuity, he added, “We made the original touring production available online during our digital season in October 2021 because we wanted to perpetuate the narrative's resonance among youthful spectators, who will undoubtedly be captivated by its vibrant characters and poignant message.”

Vancouver Opera In Schools, established over four decades ago, stands as one of Canada's foremost opera touring programs, delivering enriching experiences to children and families across British Columbia each season. Featuring fully staged operas performed in English, VOIS endeavors to foster a love for the arts among young audiences statewide.
