Marin Alsop Appointed Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Embarks on Exciting New Era
June 6, 2023

Marin Alsop has been appointed as the new artistic director and chief conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR), according to an announcement by the orchestra. Alsop's tenure will begin in the 2023/24 season, following her conducting of the Last Night of the Proms in 2023. She will collaborate closely with NOSPR's general and programme director, Ewa Bogusz-Moore, to shape the orchestra's program and enhance its reputation both nationally and internationally.

Alsop first conducted the NOSPR in February 2021, and since then, she has led 15 concerts, taken the orchestra on a tour to Japan, and conducted three masterclasses. As the artistic director, she will lead seven symphonic concerts during the 2023/24 season, including the second edition of the Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition and the recording of Krzysztof Penderecki's opera, The Black Mask.

During her visit to Katowice in March 2023, Alsop conducted a masterclass and gave a brief performance with young Ukrainian conductors as part of the SPLOT–UA Residency program for Ukrainian creatives. The ensemble included musicians from the NOSPR Academy, and they presented a composition by Polish composer Agata Zubel.

In her statement, Alsop expressed her enthusiasm for the appointment and her eagerness to continue the fruitful collaboration with NOSPR. She highlighted the orchestra's Japan tour, ongoing recording projects, and concert initiatives as part of a new vision for the modern orchestra. Alsop also emphasized her excitement about upcoming projects such as the performance of Penderecki's rarely performed The Black Mask and the recording of works by composers like Grażyna Bacewicz and Agata Zubel. She commended NOSPR's commitment to nurturing young musicians and conductors, which aligns with her personal dedication to the future of classical music.

Founded in 1935, NOSPR is Poland's first independent radio symphony orchestra and has been based in Katowice since the 1940s. The orchestra has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Leonard Bernstein and Martha Argerich and has premiered compositions by notable composers including Witold Lutosławski and Krzysztof Penderecki.

Additionally, Alsop will continue in her position as the chief conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and was recently announced as the new principal guest conductor of the Philharmonia.
