Maestro Sergey Smbatyan: A Symphony of International Collaboration and Prestige

Sergey Smbatyan serves as the artistic director and principal conductor of both the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra since 2019.

Recently, he conducted the Berlin Symphony Orchestra during Dubai’s 2024 InClassica International Music Festival, expressing his delight in collaborating with the orchestra via an Instagram post.

Smbatyan debuted with the London Symphony Orchestra and has since conducted various renowned orchestras worldwide, including the Philharmonia Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra, and the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra.

His passion for contemporary music has led him to collaborate with notable composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Tigran Mansuryan, Arvo Pärt, and Gia Kancheli.

Recent highlights in his career include leading the Romanian National Philharmonic Orchestra on a concert tour in the UK and directing the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra on a UK tour commemorating Aram Khachaturian’s 120th anniversary.

In the current season, Smbatyan is scheduled to perform with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra del Teatro Goldoni di Livorno at prestigious venues such as the Berliner Philharmonie, Teatro Goldoni, Dubai Opera, and the Royal Opera House in Muscat.

Smbatyan has been honored with titles such as Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia and the Chevalier of the “Order of Arts and Letters” of France. Additionally, in 2023, he was appointed as a UNICEF National Ambassador.
