Harmonious Triumph: Highlights from the 2024 George and Nora London Foundation Opera Competition

The 2024 iteration of the George and Nora London Foundation Competition recently concluded. This renowned competition, open to opera singers from the United States and Canada, stands as one of the oldest and most esteemed events in its category. The finals for this year took place at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City.

Following three days of rigorous semi-final performances, twelve singers emerged to advance to the next stage. Among them, six were honored with the prestigious George London Award, which carries a prize of $12,000 each, while the remaining six received the George London Encouragement Award, entailing a prize of $2,000 each.

The recipients of the George London Award are:

  • Katerina Burton, soprano
  • Emily Treigle, mezzo-soprano
  • Erin Wagner, mezzo-soprano
  • Samuel White, tenor
  • Benjamin Dickerson, baritone
  • Darren Drone, baritone

The recipients of the George London Encouragement Award are:

  • Adia Evans, soprano
  • Renée Richardson, soprano
  • Emily Rocha, soprano
  • Cierra Byrd, mezzo-soprano
  • Bergsvein Toverud, tenor
  • Ben Strong, bass-baritone

Notable past victors of this competition include renowned artists such as Christine Brewer, Joyce DiDonato, Renée Fleming, Christine Goerke, Catherine Malfitano, James Morris, Eric Owens, Matthew Polenzani, Sondra Radvanovsky, Neil Shicoff, Willard White, and Dawn Upshaw.

The jury panel for the 2024 competition comprised Harolyn Blackwell, Susan Quittmeyer, Susanne Mentzer, Dimitri Pittas, and James Morris.
