Harmonia Mundi and Toronto Symphony Orchestra Strike a Harmonious Chord in Milestone Recording Agreement
November 22, 2023

The orchestra has entered into a significant three-year recording agreement with the independent French label Harmonia Mundi. This marks the first instance of Harmonia Mundi engaging in such a substantial collaboration with a North American orchestra. Throughout this partnership, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) will produce three major recordings, featuring compositions such as Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphonie, Stravinsky's Pulcinella ballet, and Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin ballet. Additionally, the repertoire will include new works by Canadian composers Kelly-Marie Murphy and Emilie LeBel.

Harmonia Mundi, founded in France in 1958 and part of the Belgian group PIAS specializing in independent recording, has played a pivotal role in promoting renowned musicians like Isabelle Faust, Emmanuelle Bertrand, Alexander Melnikov, and Jean-Guihen Queyras.

Gustavo Gimeno, the TSO's Music Director, expressed his enthusiasm for extending his longstanding relationship with Harmonia Mundi to Toronto. He highlighted the historical significance of Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphonie to the TSO and emphasized its alignment with the orchestra's and the label's forward-looking spirit. Gimeno is eager to contribute to this new artistic alliance.

Christian Girardin, Director of Harmonia Mundi, conveyed his delight in collaborating with the prestigious TSO, emphasizing the importance of each new signing in the realm of symphonic music. He anticipates that the upcoming projects will deviate from routine, aiming for an exploration of the repertoire. Girardin is confident that with an orchestra boasting a rich history and a conductor attentive to detail, the collaboration will be highly successful.

The TSO's Music Director Seiji Ozawa had previously recorded Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphonie with the orchestra in 1968, adding historical significance to the chosen repertoire. The collaboration between the TSO and Harmonia Mundi is anticipated to bring a fresh and dynamic perspective to symphonic music.
