From Sydney to London: Waynne Kwon Takes Center Stage as Sub-Principal Cellist of the LPO

Australian-Korean cellist Waynne Kwon has been named as the new Sub-Principal Cellist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO).

Kwon, a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, boasts bachelor's and master's degrees as well as the PGDipAS (Performance). Throughout his academic journey, Kwon was honored with prestigious awards including the Sir John Barbirolli Cello Prize, the Leonard Rose Award for the finest final recital, and the RNCM Gold Medal. Notably, he clinched the university's concerto competition title.

Recognized for his chamber music prowess, Kwon frequently collaborates with pianist Victor Lim, with whom he clinched the 2020 Tunnell Trust Music Award. Additionally, Kwon was part of the acclaimed Louko Piano Trio, which swept all chamber music accolades at the RNCM, showcased at the Manchester Mid-day Concert Series, and emerged victorious at the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe Chamber Music Competition.

Kwon has delivered captivating solo performances alongside the BBC Philharmonic, Blackburn Symphony Orchestra, Penrith Symphony Orchestra, and Concertante Ensemble. His artistry has graced renowned venues worldwide, including the Sydney Opera House, Angel Place City Recital Hall, Seoul Arts Centre, Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Southbank Centre, King’s Place, and St. John’s Smith Square.
