December 18, 2023

Francesco Meli, the renowned tenor from Genoa and the artistic director of the High Specialization Academy for opera singers at the Carlo Felice Theatre, is set to be bestowed with the Golden Cross of San Giorgio. This prestigious accolade, the highest honor conferred by the Liguria Region, is reserved for individuals, be they Italian or foreign, who have distinguished themselves through outstanding cultural, social, or moral contributions. Meli, a key figure in the opera world, particularly showcased his talent in Verdi's 'Don Carlo,' receiving acclaim during its premiere at the famed La Scala in Milan.

Expressing his thoughts on the matter, President Giovanni Toti remarked, “The Golden Cross of San Giorgio to Francesco Meli is a fitting tribute to one of the world's most celebrated opera singers. Possessing immense artistic prowess, Meli consistently proves himself as the foremost Verdi tenor of this century. We are delighted that Ligurian culture, having previously honored singer-songwriter Gino Paoli and actors Tullio Solenghi and Elisabetta Pozzi, continues to play a significant role on the international stage.”

In response to the announcement, Francesco Meli conveyed his joy and gratitude, stating, “I am incredibly happy and honored by this unexpected recognition, which crowns a career spanning over two decades. I extend my heartfelt thanks to President Toti and the Liguria Region for selecting me and deeming me worthy of this honor. Serving as an ambassador for Genoa and Liguria worldwide is a privilege that I hold dear.”
