Farewell Crescendo: Enrico Calesso Bids Adieu to Mainfranken Theater, Embarks on New Artistic Journey
July 26, 2023

Enrico Calesso, the Italian conductor, has decided not to renew his contract at the Mainfranken Theater in Würzburg, even though the city offered him a longer-term deal. He has been with the theater since the start of the 2011/12 season, and his time there has been highly successful, resulting in two contract renewals.

Despite discussions with the city's Cultural Advisor and Mayor, Calesso has chosen not to extend his stay in Würzburg. His contract will end in August 2025. Consequently, the theater's administrative staff will establish a selection committee to find his successor.

Originally from Treviso, Enrico Calesso currently holds the position of Permanent Guest Conductor at the Landestheater in Linz, in addition to his role in Würzburg. He studied under Uroš Lajovic at the University of Music in Vienna.

Calesso expressed gratitude to Lord Mayor Schuchardt and Cultural Advisor Könneke for their appreciative offer to extend his contract, which he was honored to receive. Nevertheless, he has decided to pursue new artistic challenges. The decision was tough for him as he has strong connections with his colleagues at the theater and holds a deep affection for the people of Würzburg. Despite this, he is excited about the upcoming projects in Würzburg.

Markus Trabusch, the Intendant of the Mainfranken Theater, acknowledged that by 2025, Enrico Calesso will have left a lasting impact on the music theater and concerts at the theater. He understands Calesso's desire to explore new career opportunities and fondly remembers their collaboration on Verdi's Rigoletto, which was a fortunate combination of scene and music in the opera. He wishes Calesso the best for his future career.
