Dora: A Devil's Deal in Stuttgart Opera's World Premiere
February 19, 2024

Staatsoper Stuttgart is poised to debut the world premiere of Bernhard Lang and Frank Witzel’s latest opera, “Dora.”

Centered around the character Dora, a woman in her mid-twenties trapped within the confines of her family's protective environment, the opera delves into her quest for purpose, which leads her to seek assistance from the devil. Accompanied by Lang's rhythm-infused score, Dora's story unfolds reminiscent of operatic heroines such as Elektra and Brünnhilde.

Soprano Josefin Feiler assumes the pivotal role of Dora, supported by a cast including Shannon Keegan, Dominic Große, Maria Theresa Ullrich, Stephan Bootz, and Elliott Carlton Hines. The Ancient chorus is performed by Neue Vocalsolisten, under the baton of conductor Elena Schwarz leading the Staatsorchester Stuttgart. Elisabeth Stöppler directs the production, collaborating with stage and costume designer Valentin Köhler and video designer Vincent Stefan.

Presented in five acts and sung in German with German and English supertitles, “Dora” premieres on March 3, with additional performances on March 8, 15, and 22, as well as on April 1 and 4.
