Canadian Conductor Gordon Gerrard Takes the Baton as Artistic Director of City Opera Vancouver
June 17, 2023

City Opera Vancouver has announced the selection of Canadian conductor Gordon Gerrard as their next artistic director. Gerrard will be taking over from Dr. Charles Barber, the company's original artistic director who retired in January.

Having previously lived in Vancouver, Gerrard served as the assistant and associate conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra from 2012 to 2016, working closely with Maestro Bramwell Tovey. He maintains his role as a guest conductor for the orchestra and has established strong connections with Vancouver Opera and UBC Opera. Additionally, Gerrard is currently in his sixth season as the music director of the Regina Symphony Orchestra and has worked with notable organizations such as Calgary Opera, Opera Nuova, and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

Janet Lea, the president of the board, expressed enthusiasm about Gerrard's appointment, highlighting his extensive experience as a conductor, opera specialist, and educator. She emphasized his creative programming, community engagement, and his dedication to making music accessible to all. Lea sees Gerrard's appointment as an exciting new chapter for City Opera, aligning with their values and vision.

Gerrard will assume his new role as artistic director of City Opera in September 2023, while also maintaining his position with the Regina Symphony Orchestra. He looks forward to joining City Opera and building upon its legacy of collaboration, inclusion, and impactful music-making. Gerrard aims to create contemporary chamber opera experiences that resonate with the Vancouver community and contribute to the rich cultural landscape of Canada.
