10 March, 2025

The Vilnius-based Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre is preparing to stage a revival of Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece "Rigoletto." Performances are scheduled for April 10, 12, and 15, featuring an impressive international cast. Romanian soprano Diana Alexe will take on the role of Gilda, while Simone Piazzola will perform the titular character, and Merunas Vitulskis will portray the Duke of Mantua.

This rendition of "Rigoletto" will be presented in Franco Zeffirelli's production, with conducting duties shared between Martynas Staskus and Ricardas Sumila, who will alternate at the podium throughout the performance dates.

Diana Alexe expressed her enthusiasm about the upcoming performances, stating: "I am really happy to make my debut in Vilnius singing Gilda, one of my favourite roles, and with wonderful colleagues. I am excited also to sing in the staging by Franco Zeffirelli, which was his last production before his passing in 2019."

The production holds special significance as it represents one of the final artistic visions of legendary Italian director Franco Zeffirelli. His interpretation of "Rigoletto" is known for its meticulous attention to period detail and emotional depth, hallmarks of Zeffirelli's celebrated career in opera and film.

Theatre director Margarita Mikailova commented, "We are honored to present this particular staging of 'Rigoletto' to our audiences. Zeffirelli's production captures the essence of Verdi's tragic masterpiece while bringing fresh visual splendor to our stage. Having artists of such caliber join us for these performances makes this revival particularly meaningful."

Tickets have already generated significant interest among opera enthusiasts throughout the Baltic region, with many visitors expected from neighboring countries. The Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre has announced that a portion of proceeds from the performances will support the theatre's young artist program, creating opportunities for the next generation of operatic talent.
