The New Orleans Opera Association (NOOA) has named Lila Palmer, a British-American producer and librettist, as the new general and artistic director. Starting from May 15, Palmer takes over from Clare Burovac, who served in the role for three years.
Palmer, who becomes NOOA's ninth chief executive, will be responsible for overseeing the company's operations and shaping its artistic vision for the upcoming 81st season. In addition to building on the successes of Burovac, Palmer follows in the footsteps of Robert Lyall, who led the company for 23 seasons, notably steering a 'company-saving effort' in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina before passing away earlier this year.
Expressing her thoughts on the appointment, Palmer stated, "To be asked to lead a company with the lineage of New Orleans Opera Association is a tremendous gift and a humbling responsibility." She acknowledged the city's rich history in bel canto and its enduring love for opera and music. Palmer emphasized New Orleans' resilience and joyfulness, asserting that it deserves a prominent place in the emerging golden age of American opera.
Prior to joining NOOA, Palmer served as the interim managing director and associate director for promotions and partnerships at New York's American Lyric Theater. With a background as a producer, mezzo-soprano, broadcaster, and librettist, Palmer plans to continue her work as a librettist while taking on her new role. She has upcoming collaborations with artists such as Mark Adamo, Rene Orth, and La Fura dels Baus.
Emmet Geary, the chair of NOOA's board, expressed excitement about Palmer's appointment, citing her exceptional energy, insight, and extensive experience in opera. He anticipates that Palmer's deep appreciation for both classical and contemporary repertoire will bring an exciting array of operatic performances to the city, furthering the organization's goal of connecting a broad audience to the joy of opera.
