The Maxwell Quartet Joins Epstein Fox Performances: Masters of Classical and Scottish Folk Fusion
2 February, 2024

The Maxwell Quartet is now part of the Epstein Fox Performances agency, which was established in 2022 through the merger of Epstein & Company and Fox Performances. Brooke Scholl and Michael Fox, the classical division agents of the company, will represent the ensemble.

Comprising Colin Scobie and George Smith on violins, Elliot Perks on viola, and Duncan Strachan on cello, the Maxwell Quartet excels in both classical and Scottish folk repertoire. Originating from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2010, the quartet served as Residency Artists for Enterprise Music Scotland from 2011 to 2013.

The quartet has undertaken residencies at various prestigious venues, including Oxford University, Perth Concert Hall, and numerous chamber music festivals throughout the UK. They established their own festival, Loch Shiel, in the west highlands of Scotland, and initiated a self-curated concert series at Guardswell Farm in Perthshire. Currently, the ensemble holds the position of Associate Artist at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow and at the Music at Paxton Festival in the Scottish Borders.

Their initial releases on Linn Records featured string quartets by Haydn alongside their own compositions inspired by Scottish folk music. The first disc achieved the notable position of number three in the classical specialist charts.

In 2023, the quartet unveiled "Gather," a recording that skillfully blended traditional Scottish music spanning from 1200 to the present day. The repertoire encompassed ancient Celtic plainchant from the Inchcolm Antiphoner, fishermen's songs, pipe marches from the Western Isles, and Shetland Reels, to contemporary compositions.
