24 November, 2024

At the conclusion of its 75th anniversary celebrations, the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama revealed that Dame Shirley Bassey CH DBE FRWCMD has been appointed as its new President.

She will hold this position for the next three years. The role of President is honorary and helps promote the College as Wales' national conservatoire, inspiring future generations of artists to pursue careers in the professional arts. Bassey takes over from HM King Charles, who will continue his involvement as Patron.

"I am both excited and deeply honored to be invited to serve as the next President of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Over the 22 years I've been associated with this incredible institution, I have witnessed firsthand the wealth of opportunities it offers and the remarkable students who choose to study in my hometown of Cardiff," Bassey said in a statement.

The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama has strong ties with major opera companies, such as Scottish Opera, Opera North, and the Royal Opera House, providing students with a range of industry-related experiences, including mentoring, coaching, and observational opportunities. The College also hosts the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World’s Song Prize every two years and introduced the Sir Bryn Terfel Song Prize this season.
