Royal Swedish Opera Premieres Groundbreaking Sámi-Inspired Opera 'Eatnama váibmu

The Royal Swedish Opera will debut the new opera “Eatnama váibmu” by Britta Byström and Rawdna Carita Eira.

“Eatnama váibmu” (“The Heart of the Earth”) draws inspiration from the Sámi creation myth, exploring themes of good versus evil and humanity’s relationship with nature. The cast includes Katarina Leoson, Jan Jakub Monowid, Klas Hedlund, Johanna Rudström, Jens Persson Hertzman, and Minna Tägil, alongside a large children's choir and the Royal Swedish Orchestra. The performance will be conducted by David Björkman and Anna-Maria Helsing, with Elle Márjá Eira directing.

The opera is sung in Northern Sámi and features Swedish subtitles. It is recommended for audiences aged 10 and older.

“Eatnama váibmu” will have its world premiere on the Royal Swedish Opera’s main stage on November 15.

This groundbreaking opera highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Sámi people while addressing universal themes of nature, morality, and the human condition. Byström and Eira's collaboration brings a contemporary perspective to traditional Sámi narratives, blending powerful music and storytelling. The lush orchestration and vibrant choral arrangements are expected to create an immersive and captivating experience for the audience.

With its unique fusion of Sámi tradition and modern opera, “Eatnama váibmu” is poised to offer a fresh and thought-provoking piece to the international opera scene, attracting both opera enthusiasts and those new to the genre.
