Renowned Violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins Premieres Jeff Beal's Swiftly Crafted 'Body in Motion' Concerto with St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
22 January, 2024

Renowned violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins premiered Jeff Beal's "Body in Motion" for Violin and Orchestra with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra last weekend, a project that took nearly a year to materialize. Their first encounter happened at an Eastman School of Music Alumni event, where they discussed the possibility of collaboration. Initially unsure about the seriousness of Beal's interest, Hall-Tompkins was pleasantly surprised when he expressed his desire to compose a violin concerto for her. Enthusiastically, she agreed, and the concerto, titled "Body in Motion," was completed in an impressively short period with Hall-Tompkins providing input throughout.

Unlike traditional concertos that may take several years to develop, the collaboration resulted in a swift creation and performance. Leonard Slatkin, who directed the January 12 performance, was delighted to premiere the work with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Post-performance, Slatkin praised the concerto, stating that it suited Hall-Tompkins' talents exceptionally well.

Hall-Tompkins performed the concerto without sheet music, a rarity for a new piece. Beal commended her ability, stating that on stage, it appeared as though she had been intimately acquainted with the composition for years. Hall-Tompkins, while devoted to classical music and the violin, has a penchant for pushing boundaries. One notable project is Music Kitchen – Food for the Soul, which brings classical music performances to homeless shelters. Additionally, she initiated the "Imagination Project," showcasing her versatility by combining classical and jazz genres.

Reflecting on her diverse musical journey, Hall-Tompkins offers advice to aspiring musicians: "Listen as much as possible," she emphasizes, pointing to the wealth of historic and contemporary recordings. Above all, she encourages following one's passion, persevering despite obstacles, and staying dedicated to the craft.

The St. Louis Public Radio is set to broadcast the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra concert featuring Kelly Hall-Tompkins' world premiere performance of Jeff Beal’s “Body in Motion” for Violin and Orchestra, alongside works by George Antheil, Duke Ellington, and George Gershwin on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
