Remembering Serge Gaymard: A Legacy of Leadership and Cultural Advocacy
4 May, 2024

Serge Gaymard served as the director of France’s Opéra de Reims from 2000 until 2023 when he passed away on Saturday morning due to a fire at his residence. The exact cause of his death is under investigation, with initial suggestions indicating it might be related to smoking in bed. An autopsy will be conducted as a precautionary measure.

In addition to his role at Opéra de Reims, Gaymard dedicated two decades to chairing the association "Cultures du Cœur Champagne-Ardenne," founded in 2003 to advocate for universal access to cultural and sporting events.

He was also actively involved as an administrator at Génération Opéra, which paid tribute to his insightful contributions to the evolution of operatic productions.

Opéra de Reims has initiated a tribute book to commemorate Gaymard's contributions, inviting those touched by his work to contribute, and will host the "All at the Opera" event on May 5, 2024, in his honor.

The opera house expressed profound sadness at Gaymard's passing, emphasizing his influential leadership during his 23-year tenure and highlighting his enduring impact on the art form.

The mayor of Reims, Arnaud Robinet, praised Gaymard's cultural contributions, intelligence, and interpersonal qualities, promising a fitting tribute from the city to honor his memory and legacy.
