Portia White's Legacy Comes Alive in 'Aportia Chryptych

The Canadian Opera Company is thrilled to announce the debut of "Aportia Chryptych: A Black Opera for Portia White," a groundbreaking production crafted by director and librettist HAUI and composer and conductor Sean Mayes. This new opera celebrates the remarkable legacy of Nova Scotia contralto Portia White, the pioneering Black Canadian concert artist who attained global renown. Through a rich blend of musical styles intertwining opera with spoken word, rap, traditional folk melodies, and R&B, the opera delves into White's life story, reclaiming her narrative for contemporary audiences. The opera's talented ensemble cast embodies the various facets of White's essence, with sopranos Neema Bickersteth and Adrienne Danrich portraying her Body and Spirit, and contralto SATE embodying her Soul.
