Metropolitan Opera to Make Cinematic Debut of Mozart's 'The Magic Flute' in HD This December

The Metropolitan Opera is preparing to present its first-ever high-definition broadcast to cinemas.

As part of the 2024–25 Live in HD season, the company will screen Mozart's "The Magic Flute" in select theaters during the holiday season. This encore presentation will take place on Saturday, December 7, at 1 p.m. local time in various U.S. cinemas, with additional showings in countries including Belgium, the Czech Republic, the Dominican Republic, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Spain, and Sweden.

This abridged, English-language version of Mozart’s opera, directed by Julie Taymor, stars Matthew Polenzani as Tamino, Ying Huang as Pamina, Nathan Gunn as Papageno, Erika Miklósa as the Queen of the Night, and René Pape as Sarastro.

The Live in HD transmission for cinemas was directed by Gary Halvorson and was initially broadcast live on December 30, 2006.
