Maestro of Libretto: Mark Campbell's Ode to a Lifetime of Operatic Excellence

The librettist and lyricist Mark Campbell will be honored for his significant contributions to the world of opera. The National Opera Association (NOA) will present him with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award during its upcoming conference in Phoenix from January 3-6.

Recipients of this esteemed award are chosen by the Board of Directors of NOA and are individuals who have achieved notable success in the international opera scene. Mark Campbell's libretti rank among the most successful in the contemporary opera repertoire. His opera Silent Night earned him a Pulitzer Prize in Music, and in 2018, he received a GRAMMY Award for Best Opera Recording for The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs.

Over the course of his career, Campbell has crafted the libretti for 40 different operas, penned lyrics for 7 musicals, and created the text for 9 song cycles and 4 oratorios. His exceptional work has earned him various accolades, including the inaugural Kleban Foundation Award for a Lyricist, three GRAMMY nominations for Best Classical Recording, two Richard Rodgers Awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, three Drama Desk nominations, a Jonathan Larson Foundation Award, a New York Foundation for the Arts Playwriting Fellowship, the first Dominic J. Pelliciotti Award, and a grant from the New York State Council of the Arts.

Notably, Mark Campbell is the founder of the Campbell Opera Librettist Prize, the first-ever award dedicated to opera librettists in the history of the art form. Additionally, he co-created the True Voice Award, specifically recognizing transgender singers.
