15 February, 2024

The London Sinfonietta has been awarded a £100,000 grant from the Cockayne Grants for the Arts to bolster its efforts in commissioning and presenting new musical works. The ensemble will utilize the funding to premiere a series of eight new compositions in upcoming performances. Ensuring diversity in representation, the ensemble aims to select composers reflective of London's multicultural tapestry.

These eight compositions will enrich the London Sinfonietta's extensive repertoire, which already includes more than 470 commissioned pieces spanning its 56-year history.

Andrew Burke, CEO and Artistic Director of the London Sinfonietta, expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the importance of contemporary classical music in engaging schools, youth, and communities.

Jo Hedley, Executive Director of Cockayne, praised the London Sinfonietta's longstanding commitment to avant-garde music, emphasizing the significance of their contributions to modern classical music.

In an era where artistic innovation is vital, particularly amidst economic challenges, Cockayne celebrates its 10th anniversary by supporting the London Sinfonietta with a special £100,000 Anniversary Commissioning Grant. This grant aims to foster opportunities for emerging composers, performers, and audiences, enabling the ensemble to continue pushing boundaries in musical creation and performance.
