Jim Lucchese Named Fifth President of Berklee College of Music, Effective January 2025

Jim Lucchese has been appointed as the fifth president of Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts, starting from January 1, 2025. Until his tenure begins, David Bogen, Berklee’s provost, will serve as interim president, while Betsy Newman, senior vice president of student enrollment and engagement, will remain as interim executive vice president.

Lucchese, a native of Boston and a musician, has been closely affiliated with Berklee throughout his career. He brings over twenty years of experience in artist-focused services to his new role. His professional journey includes roles as an attorney representing artists initially, followed by CEO positions at companies like The Echo Nest, acquired by Spotify during his tenure, and Sofar Sounds, where he expanded services for artists globally.

Educationally, Lucchese holds degrees from Boston College and Georgetown University Law Center. His relationship with Berklee began in 1989 when he attended its summer performance program. Over the years, he has contributed to Berklee through various advisory roles, demonstrating a deep commitment to its mission and community.

Berklee’s board chair, Martin J. Mannion, praised Lucchese’s entrepreneurial success and leadership qualities, emphasizing his ability to innovate in the music industry while respecting and advancing the careers of artists. Sean Skeete, dean of Berklee’s Professional Performance Division, highlighted Lucchese's potential to lead Berklee to new heights in education, technology, and creative leadership across music, dance, and theater.

In his own words, Lucchese expressed gratitude and excitement about joining Berklee, underscoring his eagerness to collaborate with the institution's diverse community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters across various creative disciplines. He emphasized his dedication to upholding Berklee’s mission, which includes honoring the artistic traditions of the African diaspora and embracing diversity in all its forms.
