Isaac Thompson Takes the Baton: Leading the Oregon Symphony into a Harmonious Future

Isaac Thompson has been appointed as the new President and CEO of the Oregon Symphony, following an extensive global search that evaluated over 40 candidates. Thompson's previous role was as the Managing Director of the New York Philharmonic.

While in New York, Thompson oversaw both the artistic and business aspects of the orchestra's activities. He also played a key role in the orchestra's efforts towards Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. He played a significant role in planning the orchestra's return to David Geffen Hall and was a member of the search committee that selected Gustavo Dudamel as the orchestra's Music Director.

Thompson is set to assume his new position in Oregon in October 2023, succeeding Scott Showalter, who will transition to become the Executive Advisor to the President and Board.

Dan Drinkward, Chair of the Board, expressed enthusiasm about Thompson joining the Oregon Symphony as the new President and CEO, highlighting his ability to ensure the orchestra's commitment to artistic excellence, community engagement, and financial stability.

Thompson's background combines artistic expertise and business acumen, particularly evident from his time at the New York Philharmonic. His success in establishing strong relationships with diverse communities through innovative programming and fostering connections with local stakeholders, donors, strategic partners, and other arts organizations was impressive.

Thompson shared his excitement about leading the Oregon Symphony, acknowledging the city of Portland's creative energy as a source of inspiration. He looks forward to collaborating with Music Director David Danzmayr and the Symphony's Board, musicians, and staff to shape an innovative and impactful vision for the future.

Thompson also expressed his eagerness to engage with the wider Oregon community, uphold existing partnerships, and forge new connections to advance the Symphony's mission and enhance its influence.
