In 2024, Paul Wiancko, a cellist and composer, will assume the role of Charles E. and Andrea L. Volpe Director of Chamber Music, succeeding his prior position as Composer-in-Residence at the Spoleto Festival USA. This annual 17-day festival, known for attracting world-renowned classical musicians to its Bank of America Chamber Music series, will see Wiancko curating the repertoire and hosting these concerts at the Dock Street Theatre.
Wiancko's appointment is a historic one for the Festival, as he will be the first director to simultaneously hold the roles of performer and composer. Before joining the Kronos Quartet in 2023, he served as the cellist for the Harlem Quartet and co-founded the viola and cello duo Ayane & Paul, as well as the unique quartet, Owls.
As a composer, Wiancko's works have been performed by prestigious ensembles such as the St. Lawrence Kronos, Aizuri, Parker, Calder, and Attacca Quartets, among others.
In his own words, Wiancko expressed his enthusiasm for the Festival and the growth of chamber music, emphasizing the interconnectedness of music, art, and thought.
Spoleto Festival General Director & CEO Mena Mark Hanna praised Wiancko's passion for chamber music and his ability to convey complex musical concepts. Hanna believes that Wiancko will bring innovative ideas to Spoleto and the chamber music field, pushing the boundaries of traditional genres and expectations.
Wiancko's appointment is the second significant artistic decision during Hanna's tenure as general director. Previously, conductor Timothy Myers was announced as the new music director of the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra, joining Director of Choral Activities Joe Miller and Jazz Curator Larry Blumenfeld in the festival's artistic leadership.
