Harmonious Triumph: National Youth Orchestra Concludes Epic Summer Tour at the Rady Shell
31 July, 2023

On Friday night at the Rady Shell, the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America showcased their talents. Supported by the Carnegie Hall Music Institute in New York, this ensemble consists of exceptionally gifted teenage musicians from all over the country.

Representing 31 states, the orchestra includes a group from Southern California, who have been touring nationally throughout the summer. Spencer Quarles, an 18-year-old graduate from Granada Hills Charter High School, shared his love for the deep and rich sound of the viola. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall and considers the national tour as the culmination of his musical education and dedication.

Admission into the orchestra is a rigorous process involving written essays and multiple auditions. Each year, student musicians must reapply to participate in the multicity summer tour.

Among the 100 members of the ensemble are Jiin Yun and Jaden Kim, both students and close friends at the Orange County School of the Arts in Santa Ana. Jiin, who has been playing the cello since kindergarten, describes music as an international language that transcends barriers of culture and language.

Jaden, a violinist, has been with the orchestra for two years. He highlighted the process of the musicians adjusting and coming together during rehearsals, resulting in a remarkable performance at the end of the tour.

The concert at the Rady Shell marked the conclusion of this year's national tour.
