Gateways Music Festival Brings Black Classical Artistry to NYC

The Gateways Music Festival is back in New York City, showcasing the profound impact of Black classical artists through a series of captivating performances.

Soprano Amber Rogers takes the stage with a selection of vocal pieces in “Celebrating William Levi Dawson’s Legacy Through Words, Music, and Dialogue.” Dr. Louise Toppin delivers a lecture, moderates a panel, and guides community discussions.

Performance Schedule: April 23 & 26 (Eastman School of Music & Carnegie Hall)

Mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges performs as the soloist in the debut of Damien Sneed’s “Reflections of Resilience: Five Spirituals,” a work commissioned by Gateways. The program also features Dawson’s “Negro Folk Symphony” and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, with Anthony Parnther leading the Gateways Festival Orchestra.

In addition to these marquee events, the festival offers a rich lineup of supporting activities. On April 25, a special workshop led by prominent vocal coach Marcus Shields explores techniques in Black classical vocal performance, held at the Eastman School of Music. The session is designed for aspiring artists and enthusiasts alike, fostering a deeper appreciation of the genre.

The festival wraps up on April 28 with a community celebration at Carnegie Hall, featuring a collaborative performance by local choirs alongside Gateways artists. This closing event honors the legacy of Black musical traditions and their ongoing influence, inviting audiences to join in song and reflection.
