Carlos Chausson is set to be awarded the Medalla de Oro in recognition of his contributions to the “Bellas Artes.”
The renowned bass will be among 38 distinguished artists to receive this honor. Other recipients include actresses Maribel Verdú, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, and Carmen Machi, actors Eduard Fernández and Josep María Pou, as well as poet Bernardo Atxaga.
Chausson is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished Spanish singers of his generation. He trained at the Escuela Superior de Canto in Madrid and the University of Michigan. His professional debut took place in 1976 as Masetto in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Opera of Las Palmas. Following this, he was engaged by major opera houses in Vienna, Munich, and Berlin, and performed at prestigious venues like the Teatro alla Scala, Zurich Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera.
He is particularly celebrated for his performances of the Bel Canto repertoire, especially in works by Rossini and Donizetti, as well as his interpretations of Mozart and Offenbach. In 2022, Chausson announced his retirement, marking the end of his illustrious career with a performance of La Commedia è (in)finita at the les Arts in Valencia, alongside Ramon Gener.
