Calgary Opera Unveils Bold New Take on Mozart's "Don Giovanni" for 2024-25 Season
6 October, 2024

Calgary Opera will kick off its 2024-25 season with Mozart's "Don Giovanni."

The performances are scheduled from November 2 to 8, 2024, at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, under the direction of Canadian Anna Theodosakis and conducted by Jonathan Brandani.

In this new production, Theodosakis invites the audience to explore the darker elements of the story, emphasizing the repercussions of Giovanni’s actions from the viewpoints of his victims. The director remarked, “I want to highlight the courage of the women in the narrative. Donna Anna, Donna Elvira, and Zerlina each resist in their own ways, and I'm excited to showcase their musical and dramatic subtleties.”

The cast features baritone Phillip Addis, who has previously portrayed Don Giovanni in Edmonton, bass-baritone Guido Loconsolo as Leporello, sopranos Midori Marsh and Aviva Fortunata as Donna Anna and Donna Elvira, Christina Thanisch-Smith as Zerlina, bass-baritone Neil Craighead as Masetto and The Commendatore, and tenor Chuan Wang as Don Ottavio.

The season will also present "Don Pasquale" and "Bluebeard’s Castle."
