The Warsaw Philharmonic has appointed the Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbański as its new artistic director, succeeding Andrzej Boreyko, who assumed the role in 2019.
At the age of 41, Urbański will become the youngest conductor in the Philharmonic's post-war history. He is set to unveil his plans for the upcoming season in Warsaw at the end of January.
In addition to his role in Warsaw, Urbański will also commence his position as the chief conductor of the Bern Symphony Orchestra in the 2024/25 season.
Having graduated from the Music Academy in Warsaw in 2007, Urbański initially served as an assistant conductor with the Warsaw Philharmonic for two years. He later took on the roles of principal guest conductor with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.
From 2011 to 2021, he served as the music director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and until 2017, he held the positions of chief conductor and artistic director of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, where he now serves as a guest conductor of honor. In 2022, he was appointed the principal guest conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana.
This season, Urbański is scheduled to conduct performances with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic.
The managers of the Warsaw Philharmonic expressed their satisfaction, stating, "Urbański is exactly what we wanted: a successful artist of the young generation who, thanks to his clear vision of music, extraordinary skills, and engaging programming, can open us to a new audience," according to Rzeczpospolita News.
