Adelaide Festival has revealed one of the key shows featured in its 2024 program: The Nightingale and Other Fables, a remarkable production by the renowned Canadian artist Robert Lepage.
Lepage will be arriving in Australia in late February to oversee the rehearsals for this extraordinary performance, which was initially showcased in Toronto back in 2010. Since then, it has received widespread acclaim for its innovative reinterpretation of Igor Stravinsky's opera, The Nightingale. The story is told through a combination of Vietnamese water puppetry and traditional Japanese puppet theatre.
This production has gained immense popularity for its unconventional approach to opera, completely transforming the traditional operatic experience. In this version, the orchestra is positioned on the stage itself, while the singers not only perform but also manipulate puppets within a water-filled orchestra pit.
