Starting on May 16, 2025, Glyndebourne will unveil a special exhibition dedicated to honoring the incredible legacy of the renowned designer, Oliver Messel.

Titled “Oliver Messel: Designer, Maker, Influencer,” this exhibition will commemorate 75 years since Messel created his first opera design for Glyndebourne. His debut production was "Arabella," which premiered in 1950 at the Edinburgh International Festival. From 1950 to 1965, Messel went on to design nine productions for Glyndebourne, including iconic works such as “Le Nozze di Figaro,” “Idomeneo,” and “Der Rosenkavalier.”

The exhibition will showcase a variety of stage designs, costumes, and props that emphasize Messel’s immense contributions to Glyndebourne's rich history. It will also feature the work of modern set designer Gary McCann, whose creations have been deeply inspired by Messel’s unique and visually striking style.

Rich in artistry and craftsmanship, it will immerse visitors in the glamorous, imaginative world that Messel brought to life on our stage.”

The exhibition will remain open until August 24, 2025, and will be accessible to ticket holders as well as available by appointment for others wishing to experience this remarkable tribute to one of opera's greatest designers.
