Today, Opera North has named Katie Stillman as the new Leader of its Orchestra, effective from August onwards. Katie brings with her a wealth of experience, having had a diverse career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral leader. Currently serving as the first violinist with the Villiers Quartet, a renowned UK-based string quartet celebrated for their interpretations of Late Beethoven works and their advocacy for British composers, Katie has also showcased her talents with various other ensembles including the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Manchester Camerata, and Northern Chamber Orchestra. Additionally, she has collaborated with Opera North on multiple occasions, serving as a guest leader for several productions.

Katie's dedication to nurturing the next generation of musicians is evident through her involvement in educational initiatives such as the Bach to Baby concert series for children. Furthermore, she has shared her expertise by teaching at esteemed institutions like Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, where she herself completed her studies.
