Conductor Jun Märkl will assume the role in 2025, starting with an initial term of four seasons.
German-Japanese conductor Jun Märkl, who has been serving as the Residentie Orkest's permanent Guest Conductor since 2021, is set to become the Chief Conductor in The Hague at the beginning of the 2025/26 season, succeeding Anja Bihlmaier. Märkl will hold this position for an initial term of four seasons.
Having studied under the guidance of notable figures such as Sergiu Celibidache, Leonard Bernstein, and Seiji Ozawa, Jun Märkl has conducted prestigious orchestras including the Munich Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Tonhalle Zürich, and the Oslo Philharmonic.
He has previously held the position of chief conductor for the Orchestre National de Lyon and the MDR-Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, among others. Currently, Märkl serves as the Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, Artistic Advisor of the Indianapolis Symphony, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Oregon Symphony.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Märkl stated, "After many years of inspiring music-making with the wonderful musicians of the Residentie Orkest, I am very excited to expand and strengthen our relationship. I am looking forward to working closely with Sven Arne Tepl and his team, with Richard Egarr and Chloe Rooke, to further deepen the broad profile of a dedicated, passionate, and high-quality orchestra in and outside The Hague."
Sven Arne Tepl, the general and artistic director of the Residentie Orkest, expressed delight, saying, "We are delighted that one of the most experienced conductors on the international circuit is joining the Residentie Orkest as chief conductor. We look forward to continuing and further intensifying our long-standing relationship with Jun and Richard, to the beginning of permanent collaboration with Chloe and, of course, to continuing the great work with Anja for the next season and a half."
