Червень 21, 2023

President Peter Salovey has announced that José García-León from The Juilliard School will become the next dean of the Yale School of Music. García-León, a highly acclaimed pianist and currently serving as Juilliard's dean of academic affairs and assessment, previously held positions as dean and professor of music at the University of New Haven. He will take over the role from the longtime dean, Robert Blocker, starting on September 1.

President Salovey expressed confidence in García-León, stating that he will contribute significantly to Yale's renowned intellectual and creative environment. He emphasized García-León's dedication to the mission of the School of Music, which focuses on educating and inspiring students with exceptional artistic and academic talents for the benefit of the profession and society.

García-León brings extensive experience in musical education, leadership, and teaching to Yale. During his time at Juilliard, he successfully established and expanded various institutional initiatives, such as introducing new degree programs, certificates, and curricula. He also implemented innovative instructional technologies, launched a branch campus in China, and strengthened opportunities for musical and academic exchange with partner schools.

In addition to his accomplishments as a pianist, García-León is recognized as a noted scholar. He has conducted research on the origins and multiculturalism of flamenco music, the similarities and differences between Argentinian tango and tango flamenco, and the composition of jazz and classical music. He has received numerous honors and awards, including first prize in the Artist International Competition of New York. As a solo recitalist, he has performed extensively worldwide, including prestigious venues such as the Big Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, as well as at the St. Petersburg International Music Festival.

Expressing his gratitude and humility, García-León said he is honored to be appointed as the dean of the Yale School of Music, specifically as the Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Dean. He acknowledged the transformative leadership of his predecessor, Dean Robert Blocker, and the financial stability of the school, which provides ample opportunities for growth and advancement. García-León believes that the Yale School of Music, being the only Ivy League school dedicated to music, has a unique position to shape the future of music education. He envisions leveraging the resources of a world-class university and strengthening collaborations with other professional schools to forge new paths in the music profession. He emphasizes the importance of curiosity, creativity, compassion, and collaboration in shaping a vibrant future for music education. Prior to his tenure at Juilliard, García-León held positions as an associate dean at the University of New Haven's College of Arts and Sciences and as a music program founder and developer at Oakland Community College in Michigan.
