Into the Night's Embrace: Elīna Garanča's Musical Journey from Dusk to Dawn
Лютий 11, 2024

Describing the allure of the night, Elīna Garanča explores a spectrum of mixed emotions, hues, and tones. She acknowledges that while some may perceive the night as a time of apprehension and solitude, it also offers a tranquil refuge as the world settles into slumber. Garanča's upcoming album, "When Night Falls …," slated for release on World Sleep Day (March 15, 2024), delves into these complexities, capturing the transition from twilight to the stillness of early morning through a selection of songs accompanied by orchestras, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments.

The album's thematic progression mirrors the journey from the vibrant colors of dusk, resonating with the echoes of daytime activities, to the intimacy and quietude of nighttime. Opening with compositions like Richard Strauss's "Lullaby," Falla's "Asturiana," and Humperdinck's "Evening Prayer" from "Hänsel und Gretel," Garanča employs overdubbing techniques to portray both roles in the latter piece. Throughout, she collaborates with various musical ensembles and instrumentalists to evoke the introspective mood of nighttime.

Garanča's partnership with the guitar, exemplified by performances with Raphaël Feuillâtre and José María Gallardo del Rey, adds a nuanced dimension to her vocal expression. Embracing her Latvian heritage, she includes traditional folk songs and compositions by Alfrēds Kalniņš, Jānis Zālīts, and the renowned Raimonds Pauls, accompanied by the master himself on piano. These personal touches infuse the album with a sense of nostalgia and cultural resonance, reflecting Garanča's deep connection to her roots.
