Handel's Messiah Returns to Symphony Hall: The Handel and Haydn Society Celebrates 171st Year with New 'CitySing' Initiative
Листопад 26, 2024

The Handel and Haydn Society (H+H) will stage Händel's Messiah at Symphony Hall beginning on November 29, 2024, running through December 1.

This production will feature period instruments and vocal soloists such as soprano Jeanine De Bique, countertenor Reginald Mobley, tenor Nicholas Phan, and baritone Sumner Thompson.

The organization also announced a new initiative called "CitySing," created by Artistic Director Jonathan Cohen to honor and highlight the choral community of Greater Boston. This program allows singers from local choral groups, as well as high school members of the H+H Youth Choruses Chamber Choir, to join the soloists and the H+H Orchestra and Chorus in performing Messiah on stage.

“As with the oratorio Messiah, CitySing is a celebration of voices,” said Jonathan Cohen, H+H’s Artistic Director, in a press release. “The incredible talent in Boston’s choral community and within our own Youth Choruses is truly remarkable. These voices combine with our professional chorus and outstanding soloists to deliver a stunning rendition of Messiah and breathe new life into this cherished holiday tradition.”

These performances mark the 171st consecutive year that the society will present Händel’s masterpiece, which was first performed on Christmas Day in 1815 at Kings Chapel in Boston. Moreover, the December 1 performance will be the 450th time H+H has presented the complete work.
