The Berkeley Symphony was established in 1971 in Berkeley, California, with a mission to showcase, debut, and commission new music that represents the diverse cultural community of its hometown.

Today, the orchestra announced that it has received a generous donation of $1.5 million from Gordon Getty. As the orchestra embarks on its 52nd season, this contribution will support the future growth of Berkeley Symphony under the guidance of Music Director Joseph Young and Executive Director Kate Kammeyer. The funds will not only expand the orchestra's influence beyond the East Bay and the wider San Francisco Bay Area but also enable Berkeley Symphony to further explore innovative programming and educational initiatives.

René Mandel, Artistic Director of Berkeley Symphony, expresses deep gratitude to Gordon Getty for his exceptionally generous gift and his consistent support and friendship towards the orchestra. Berkeley Symphony has been a pioneer in championing music from various eras and has continuously premiered works by contemporary composers since its inception. Under the leadership of Joseph Young, who became the orchestra's fourth Music Director in its 50-year history and had a highly successful debut in February 2019, Berkeley Symphony entered a new chapter in the 2019-2020 season.

With the support received, the orchestra will continue to flourish, seizing new opportunities, and creating a brighter future for the Symphony.
