The English Symphony Orchestra is set to inaugurate its residency in Malvern with an engaging concert titled “The Joker’s Wild – Mischief in Music,” taking place on Nov. 12, 2025, at the Malvern Theatres. This opening event promises a delightful exploration of musical whimsy, blending classical masterpieces with cabaret flair under the baton of conductor Kenneth Woods.

At the heart of the evening stands soprano April Fredrick, who will lead the audience through a vibrant selection of works. The program features Haydn’s Symphony No. 60, “Il Distratto,” known for its humorous distractions and unexpected turns; Weill’s “Cabaret Songs,” evoking the smoky allure of interwar Berlin; Schulhoff’s Suite for Chamber Orchestra, a jazzy and eclectic interlude; and Milhaud’s “The Ox on the Roof,” a surreal ballet score infused with Brazilian rhythms and modernist mischief. Woods, steering the orchestra with his characteristic insight, ensures these pieces come alive in a cohesive celebration of playful rebellion in sound.

The performance commences promptly at 7:30 p.m. local time, offering patrons an evening of spirited entertainment to kick off the residency on a high note.

Looking ahead, Fredrick will reunite with the English Symphony Orchestra for its Cheltenham Residency, appearing in a special concert on Dec. 2, 2025. Her collaborations extend far beyond this ensemble; she has graced stages with the Orchestra of the Swan, Cheltenham Symphony Orchestra, D’Accord, Dei Gratia, Leicester Bach Choir, Paradiso Baroque, and the City of London Choir, showcasing her versatility across diverse repertoires and venues.
