Eight Promising Voices Advance to Vienna Opera Competition's Historic Debut

The inaugural Vienna Opera Competition has revealed its select group of finalists who will compete in the organization's first-ever international vocal contest. This groundbreaking competition is scheduled to take place on August 5, 2025, featuring eight exceptionally talented vocalists who have been chosen to represent the premiere edition of this prestigious event.

Among the distinguished finalists preparing for this momentous occasion are several remarkable artists from various corners of the world. The diverse group includes Sophie Salvesani, a gifted soprano from Australia, alongside South Korean tenor Ju Hyeok Lee, who will bring his vocal artistry to the competition stage. The United States will be represented by bass William Meinert, while Ukraine's own Roman Chabaranok will also showcase his bass vocal range. The United Kingdom contributes soprano Louisa Stirland to this international gathering, and Turkey's mezzo-soprano Dilan Şaka adds further diversity to the lineup. Additionally, the competition will feature Temple Hammen, another accomplished soprano from the United States, and South Korean baritone Daniel Gwon, completing this exceptional roster of eight finalists.

These emerging opera talents, hailing from different continents and musical traditions, are set to deliver their performances at the historic Mozarthaus Vienna, a venue that perfectly complements the artistic significance of this competition. The culminating round of the competition will welcome public attendance, ensuring that opera enthusiasts can witness these performances in person. Furthermore, the event will be broadcast globally through streaming technology, allowing opera lovers worldwide to experience these extraordinary performances from the comfort of their homes and providing them with an intimate view of what may represent the next generation of opera stars.

The panel of judges assembled for this inaugural competition brings together distinguished expertise from the opera world. Michael Barobeck, who serves as the Artistic Director of Graz Opera, will lend his extensive knowledge to the evaluation process. Alexa Sowers, who previously held the position of Music Director at the Houston Grand Opera, will also contribute her seasoned perspective to the jury. Completing this expert panel is Viktoria Loukianetz, a renowned soprano who has transitioned into vocal instruction, bringing both performance experience and pedagogical insight to the judging process.
