The Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra has made an announcement that Marin Alsop will not be able to participate in their upcoming national tour due to health reasons that prevent her from traveling. However, the dynamic conductor Joseph Young will take her place.

Marin Alsop expressed her regret over having to cancel her involvement with an orchestra that holds a special place in her heart. She expressed her enthusiasm for Joseph Young taking on the role and praised his stage presence, musical finesse, and exceptional conducting skills. She believes he will represent her well on the South African stage and thanked the audience for their support.

The Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra's tour, titled "Powerful Harmony," will proceed as planned. The tour will visit three cities: Johannesburg at the Linder Auditorium on Thursday, Cape Town at the City Hall on August 12, and Gqeberha at the Feather Market Centre on Monday, August 14. The program remains unchanged, featuring soprano star Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha performing popular arias from grand operas in the first half and Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 in the second half.

Joseph Young, who previously led the Mzansi Philharmonic for its inaugural concert, has been described as a suitable replacement due to his close relationship with both Alsop and the orchestra. Bongani Tembe, the chief executive and artistic director of Mzansi Philharmonic, assured audiences that they are in for a treat with Young's involvement. Young, known for his adventurous programming, is highly regarded as one of the most talented conductors of his generation. He is the music director of the Berkeley Symphony and the Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg artistic director of ensembles at the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University.

Over the past year, Young has made significant debuts with prestigious orchestras and organizations, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Washington National Opera.

Joseph Young expressed his honor in stepping in for Marin Alsop, his mentor for over 15 years. He looks forward to working with the orchestra once again and connecting with new audiences in South Africa.
