Deutsche Oper Berlin Honors Peter Seiffert with "Lohengrin" Performance
Квітень 21, 2025

On April 20, the Deutsche Oper Berlin will commemorate the late Peter Seiffert with a special performance of “Lohengrin.”

Seiffert passed away on April 14 at the age of 71.

In a tribute published by the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the company reflected, “‘Im fernen Land, unnahbar euren Schritten’ – those fortunate enough to have experienced Peter Seiffert’s portrayal of Lohengrin will forever link these words from the Grail Lay to the brilliance of his tenor voice. His debut as the swan knight at his home company on June 23, 1990, was a defining moment, launching the then 36-year-old into international stardom. This performance also marked a pivotal shift in his artistic journey, as he moved away from lyric tenor roles toward the monumental heroic parts, particularly in Richard Wagner’s operas. For three decades, Seiffert’s interpretations established him as one of the most remarkable singers of his era.”

The April 20 “Lohengrin” performance will feature Attilio Glaser, Flurina Stucki, Martin Gantner, Miina-Liisa Värelä, and Dean Murphy in leading roles.

This tribute performance underscores the profound impact Seiffert had on the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the global opera community. His mastery of Wagner’s demanding repertoire, characterized by both vocal power and emotional depth, set a standard that continues to inspire performers and audiences alike. The choice of “Lohengrin” for this memorial is particularly fitting, as Seiffert’s portrayal of the enigmatic knight was a career-defining achievement that resonated deeply with opera enthusiasts. Directed with sensitivity to honor his legacy, the production will blend the timeless grandeur of Wagner’s score with a poignant acknowledgment of Seiffert’s contributions. The ensemble, led by the talented Attilio Glaser and supported by the Deutsche Oper’s renowned orchestra, aims to deliver a performance that echoes the emotional intensity and artistic excellence Seiffert brought to the stage. This event not only celebrates his extraordinary career but also serves as a moment of reflection for the opera world, marking the loss of a true titan of the art form.
