Серпень 31, 2023

Cellist Juan Sebastián Delgado has been appointed as the Faculty Fellow for Diversity in the Arts at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where he will hold an in-residence fellowship for a two-year term from 2023 to 2025. This fellowship, granted to recent Ph.D. graduates across various disciplines represented at UMBC, is designed to support emerging scholars, artists, and creative practitioners who are dedicated to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. It also aims to prepare them for potential tenure track roles within the university.

During his tenure, Delgado will receive a stipend of $54,500 along with health benefits. He will also be allocated $5,500 for conference travel, scholarly or creative work preparation, and technological needs. Moreover, he will be provided with office space, access to campus facilities, and other resources offered by the university. As part of his role, he will engage in collaboration with mentors in teaching and research. Additionally, he will benefit from tailored professional development opportunities and will be responsible for teaching one music department course annually.

Delgado pursued his doctorate in performance under the guidance of Matt Haimovitz at McGill University, focusing on contemporary music and Nuevo tango. His doctoral research findings have been featured on CBC Radio Ideas, and he gained recognition as the featured cellist on the "Virtuoso Brain" episode of the Decouverte TV program. Notably, he has undertaken projects in 27 different countries and premiered three cello concertos composed specifically for him. These include Luis Naon's "Pájaro contra el borde de la noche," commissioned by Radio France, Jorge Bosso’s "Cinco Tangos Apócrifos" in 2016, and Jason Noble’s "The Night of a Capricious Dawn" in 2022.

As a founding member of the Stick&Bow duo alongside percussionist Krystina Marcoux, Delgado has embarked on international tours and released three albums consecutively from 2019 under the Analekta/Outhere label.

Established in 1966, UMBC is a public research university that integrates teaching, research, and service to cater to the needs of Maryland's residents. The institution currently hosts a student body of 14,000 enrolled across more than 30 academic departments.
