Breaking Boundaries in Choral Artistry: The Inspirational Journey of Marie Bucoy-Calavan

Renowned for shattering stereotypes and pushing the boundaries of the arts and choral music, Marie Bucoy-Calavan has led a wide array of vocal ensembles, spanning from elementary and high school choirs to community, college, and professional singing groups, as well as opera productions. Bucoy-Calavan has a particular passion for conducting and preparing monumental choral-orchestral pieces, having served as Assistant Conductor to Robert Porco for the May Festival Chorus, the esteemed symphonic choir affiliated with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. She has adeptly readied and performed alongside symphonic choirs led by luminaries such as John Williams, Eric Whitacre, Keith Lockhart, James Conlon, Carl St. Clair, Bramwell Tovey, John Mauceri, Louis Langrée, John Nelson, and John Alexander in prestigious venues including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, Severance Hall, Cincinnati Music Hall, and the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary.

Since 2014, Bucoy-Calavan has served as the Director of Choral Studies at The University of Akron, where she conducts choirs, advises all three pop a cappella groups on campus, and teaches conducting and choral literature at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Actively engaged in the Northeast Ohio community, she previously held positions as Chorus Director for the Akron Symphony and Artistic Director of Summit Choral Society, where she meticulously prepared and conducted choral-orchestral works. With these ensembles, she is known for her daring programming choices, emphasizing innovation by integrating various art forms, resulting in pioneering collaborations and expanded audiences for choral music.
